The children in Sarah C’s First Class learned so much in term 1.
September
Painting Colour Wheels
The children learned about colour mixing by creating their own secondary colours by mixing primary colours. See photos below.
Making Clay Fairy Doors
The children enjoyed using clay tools and their hands to manipulate clay and create their own fairy doors. They painted their fairy doors when the clay dried.
Growing and Grandparents
We invited some grandparents in to talk to both First Classes about what school was like for them when they were young. The children absolutely loved this, and asked lots of questions. Unfortunately, we were having such a great time learning, we didn't take any photos of the day, but it was a wonderful way for the children to learn about the not so distant past.
The children made family trees, and timelines of their lives. They explored and discussed the similarities and differences between their lives and their grandparents' lives when they were children.

Homes In Our Locality
First Class went for a walk around Cooldown Commons estate beside our school to see the different types of homes in our locality. The children were able to identify and name a variety of different houses and buildings. They really enjoyed the outing.
Self-Portraits with Photos
The children were working on self-portraits using half of a photo of their own face and drawing the other half.
Litter Picking For Greenschools
First Class litter picked the junior yard and recorded what they found. They also conducted a litter survey of the classroom. We have been working on ways to have less litter in our school grounds and inside the building.
Science Week
What Do Plants Need To Grow?
We planted cress seeds in school during Science Week. We watched the seeds growing and monitored any changes we could see. Some of the seeds didn't grow at all because we didn't give them any water as part of the experiment. Some didn't grow right because we kept them in a dark place where they got no light. The children got to take home their own little pot of cress.
Our Eggs-periment
The children were learning about the properties of different liquids. We places some eggs in vinegar and some in water. Some of the eggs were boiled and some were raw. The children enjoyed making predictions about what would happen to the eggs. The acid from the vinegar dissolved the shell from the eggs, leaving just a thin membrane that was easy to burst.
