Step 1: Our Senior Infants worked hard to collect empty milk bottles from home. If some children didn't have a milk bottle their friends offered to bring one in for them!
Step 2: Emer did the tricky cutting. She cut each milk bottle in half.
There were many steps involved in creating our milk bottle Elmer's! Step 1: Our Senior Infants worked hard to collect empty milk bottles from home. If some children didn't have a milk bottle their friends offered to bring one in for them! Step 2: Emer did the tricky cutting. She cut each milk bottle in half. Step 3: We had to cut lots of squares of coloured crepe paper. Step 4: We made Elmer's ears. First we cut out 2 ears from a template. Next we began sticking on squares of crepe paper using PVA glue. Step 5: We began sticking on the squares to the milk bottle. We also stuck on the ears and googly eyes! Finally, our Elmer's went on display in the corridor for the whole school to see!

In December we were treated to a special film screening of Oliver Jeffers "How to Catch a Star". It was produced by Branar (one of the leading children's theatre company's in Ireland).
Before we watched it we enjoyed reading the book. After we watched it we were feeling inspired so made clay stars. We love to play creatively in Senior Infants!
Here's a selection of pictures showing how we use our creativity to play and create real life things. One play area shows us having fun pretending we are in a doctors surgery. The next picture shows us building a wooden bench together. The last picture shows us creating a building together. Visit from Garda ColmWe were very lucky to have Garda Colm visit us in our classroom! He brought in many things for us to look at, for example: a yellow safety vest, a Garda hat, a walkie talkie, an ID badge, and a baton. He helped us learn about the importance of Gardai in our community. We had SO many questions for him including: - How long have you been a Garda? - How many criminals have you caught? - How do you catch criminals? - What do you do in a Garda station? Thanks for taking the time to visit us Garda Colm! 2-D ShapesWe have been learning four 2-D shapes this month - square, circle, rectangle and triangle. It was important for us to learn how many sides and corners they each have. We used these resources to make the different shapes: 1: Wooden sticks 2: Whiteboard markers and whiteboards 3: Play doh 4: Plastic cubes We also make 2-D shape monsters using coloured card, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners.
Aren't they amazing?! Let's Get Reading!Since we learnt all our Jolly Phonics sounds in Junior Infants, it's now time to revise them AND start using them to make words to help us read.
First, we need to say the sounds on their own. Next, we "blend" the sounds together. Lastly, we READ the word! It's a nice step-by-step way to help us learn how to read. Hot Chocolate Mug CraftSince we loved making the real hot chocolates, we also decided to try out making a hot chocolate mug craft. First we needed to glue wooden lollipop sticks together. Next we had to paint them when they were dry. Then we had to stick on pipe cleaners as the handle. Finally we needed to stick cotton wool on to look like marshmallows and then decorate them! Check out our finished crafts below.
Hot Chocolate Time!As it is now the season of winter, we decided to focus on something that makes us warm on the inside and happy on the outside - hot chocolate of course! We used milk and hot chocolate powder. Everyone had a choice of toppings - marshmallows or chocolate flake (or both!). Everyone got a chance to add some of the powder and stir the mixture. We were VERY happy as you can see below :) Thanks to Linda for bringing in her slow cooker for us to use and to Sinead for helping us serve the yummy hot chocolate when it was ready!
Let's CountIn Maths when we are learning about numbers, we like to bring them to life a little! There's no better way to do that than using ourselves!! We made "human number sentences" to help us see how we can add numbers together. We used hulu hoops, ourselves, and volunteers to be the + and = signs.
Bats everywhere!Senior Infants were learning about nocturnal animals this month so we decided to make bats. Thanks to everyone for collecting the toilet roll holders for our craft! It took us a few days to make them as there were a few steps involved. We needed toilet roll holders, black paint, pipe cleaners for eyes, bat wings which we cut out and painted, googly eyes, and sequins to decorate!
